Coolant expansion cap replacement

Post by Silvi »

Hi,
The engine light came on & on pulling over I noted the coolant expansion cap was missing :confused1: . Is this something I should pop into Toyota garage for or better off going somewhere else for a better price eg breakers or Amazon?
Cars stuck in garage however the wife's back in a couple days & going to want her car back so need to replace fairly sharpish.
Yr Manufacture 2000
(Dare I say a grey import?)
Many thanks

Personally I'd go to Mr T, they will want your VIN as that how they ensure the oarts are correct for the car however they may tell you they can't supply because it's an import and the VIN won't work (crap)
All the MK3's use the same cap, the Toyota part number is 16401-53010 and it's used on other models from around the same time (Yaris, Corrola Celica etc) so shouldn't be hard to get one.
You may well have to bleed the cooling system as there may be air in the system now, not a good thing
NOTE it is not the same as the MK1 or MK2 caps

Thanks Jimi I'll contact them.
Is there an easy way to tell if the cooling system needs bleeding?
The level was below minimum last night (several days after the drive home) so the system lost some liquid on that journey or evaporated(?). I've topped it up to between min/max & resealed.
once again many thanks.

There's no easy way of telling if there air in the system, symptoms may include erratic temp gauge readings or being higher or lower than normally, heater not as hot as normal, or blowing hot/cold. Given that the cap was off/ lost then there's every chance there air in your system.
The way the system works is that when the coolant heats up it expands, the excess expands into the header tank, when it cools down the excess is drawn back into the system. If the cap is off then instead off drawing coolant back in, it can draw in air.
When everything is normal the system will find it's own level, if the header tank is over filled when its cold then excess will be expelled out the overflow when the system heats up so finding its own level in the tank.
In your situation I certainly wouldn't take the chance, I'd bleed it as per the manual.
All 3 models of MR2 have great cooling systems IF they are properly maintained. The other thing all models have in common is they do not like being overheated 😉
This pdf covers mk3 coolant replacement including bleeding LINKY

Definitely oem cap. They lose their seal over time, which is important as they are pressure rated. When I got a new one for my 2zz conversion the difference was so noticeable. Andy
