Hi everyone,

I've been doing quite a bit of research on fitting an induction kit on my '96 SW20 NA. I am thinking to carry out this mod first and in the future go for an aftermarket exhaust. I am looking for "good" noise, no power boosts, but I do still have a bit of a bad feeling about the placement of the cone filter in the engine bay, so I have a few additional questions:

1. All induction kits I have seen fitted end up with the cone being very high in the engine bay, nowhere near the side vent which feeds the original airbox. Is there actually any cold air getting there at all? Sure, I am not looking for additional hp, but I also do not want this mod to be detrimental from this point of view.

2. In case I end up doing the mod, I was thinking of going for a K&N since it seems good quality and give some good sound from what I heard. However, I see people using the actual full kit (https://www.knfilters.co.uk/57-0387-per ... ake-system), but I would like to assemble my own piping and for that there is a much cheaper K&N option which is a standalone cone apparently, but it is a universal/generic one (https://www.knfilters.co.uk/re-0950-uni ... gL9jPD_BwE). I am not sure if I missed something, but would this be a good choice too? I mean, it should be compatible with a mk2 MR2 rev 4 such as mine and quality wise it is still a K&N.. so I think there should be no issues (?). Maybe a bit of a @#*% question, but if anyone has a clearer idea/opinion on this, please tell me what you know/think.

Unfortunately with just an open filter and no heat shield it will be getting hot air from the manifold and thus you will likely loose power, you can try counter this by installing an air feeder pipe inside the left vent.

As for your second question as long as you aren't going for a 'Universal' air filter you should be fine, I had a pipercross on my previous MR2 which sounds great.

If there is a fabrication shop near by consider getting a heat shield made up or even knock one up yourself.

Remember you'll need to clean and re oil the filters on regular intervals, I did this with my yearly service.

Apropos that comment, I was reading earlier about Porsche intercoolers (don't worry, I haven't got one!), but their purpose is to drop the intake temperature from 150C to 50C - i.e. cool air matters!

Heat soak is only ever an issue if you're not moving for a while. That area gets a lot of airflow, and any decent kit will position the filter itself right in the corner of the bay.

You won't see any measurable gain or loss in performance on an NA as long as its not a chinesium special kit. All it does it make a good noise, which gives you the impression of it being a bit quicker.

Its worth it for the sound.

As above there's fairly massive airflow through the engine bay when your on the move, on a MK1 it's enough to lift an unmatched engine bay lid. No reason to suppose the MK2 is any different

if your after good noise just get a bit 45° stainless steel pipe and stick a decent cone filter on the end, attach to TB with a t-piece (mikalor clips work better than standard jubilee clips) and job done, you don't need anything too fancy. Get a fantastic note at WOT.
