MK3 1ZZ Big Ends - Safe to order standard size?
Hi all,
I've done a search and been digging about on the web but can't really find any info.
my bigs ends have a slight rattle, just the early signs, so I figure I'll go ahead and change them. Do the 1ZZ engines ship with standard size big ends, or were there any variations from the factory?
I know, I know, I could pop them out and order the appropriate repalcements, but if it's a safe bet that they'll be standard size, I'd like to have them on hand and get the job done in a one'r

There's no such thing as a "safe bet" it may not be the original engine, perhaps its already had a regrind ? Even if your sure its all original then:-
There are 3 sizes of standard big end bearings (similar for main bearings) you can have different sizes on different journals on the same crankshaft, the only way to be sure is to look
This is from the MK3 BGB (a.k.a the Big Green Book a.k.a the Toyota Workshop Manual)

You can download a pdf copy of the BGB from the downloads section https://mr2oc.co.uk/downloads/technical-stuff/mk3.html you want section EM69 (pdf page numbef 3116)HINT:
If replacing a bearing, replace it with one having the same number as marked on the connecting rod. There are 3 sizes of standard bearings, marked ”1”, ”2” and ”3” accordingly.
Reference
Standard bearing center wall thickness:
Mark 1 1.486 – 1.490 mm (0.0585 – 0.0587 in.)
Mark 2 1.490 – 1.494 mm (0.0587 – 0.0588 in.)
Mark 3 1.494 – 1.498 mm (0.0588 – 0.0590 in.)

Thanks for the reply and useful link.
Do you know if the marking is on the cap of the conrod or further down / up?
i.e. can I drop the sump and find the marks?
Cheers

The BGB page EM69 has a diagram showing the the location of the markings on the caps and shells.
