Mr2 Ben sills?

Going through the jobs on my 2 to try and keep her going as long as I can!
I repaired the sills for last mot, but want to replace the whole lot as I know I've got a repair on the leading edge of the rear wheel arch and also that bit the stupid foam rots out behind the Sill!
So just a quick one to see how much of the door shut gets replaced and where the joint ends up!
Cheers
Jono

Why don't you ask Ben?

I did the sills on my car 18 months ago and found the Mr2 Ben items fitted reasonably well. They were a bit too wide in the door shut but with a bit of blending and paint they don't look too bad: this area is covered by the trim anyway. I've added a couple of pictures of the process to give you an idea of the work. Not too bad at all if you can weld reasonably...

This is not a job for the faint hearted! as the inner sills go as well! I had sills from Ben and the job done by Don Keeley of Buckley. Awesome job and the sills fit as good as new.

I was lucky because I had good inner sills, so just needed outers and the bit where the foam rots them all. Now they're painted and filled with waxoil they're better than new. The Mr2 Ben sills are probably 1.5 times as thick as the original metal so should outlast the rest of the car. Well worth doing and a relatively cheap fix if you can weld reasonably well.

Not sure if everybody on here knows this but the MR2 sills are an inherent problem having discovered the hard way - when those clever little people at Toyota designed the MR2 they didn't fit any drainage ports for the sills which is fine if your MR2 is driving around in Japan but not ideally suited to our wonderful UK weather !
As a result as soon as you get any water between inner and outer sills they start to rust and eventually rot from the inside out. I spent years and a lot of money getting them patched as Toyota had discontinued selling replacement sills and when they were selling them each sill would have cost close to £100 each with VAT - close to £1000 if you replaced them all ! In the end i found a fabricator in Margate who fabricated all new to OEM spec treated them with zinc oxide and retro fitted drainage ports so the problem goes away - with the brand new sills , welding and paint job i paid less than £800 and well pleased with the result.

It's a well known problem on here, two good sticky threads here about it
https://mr2oc.co.uk/forum/tech-section/ ... ation.html and if you look in downloads, there's template files available for download

Thanks for posting your experience, info on good places to get work done is always welcome. You can always post some info on this thread and we'll add it to the new database

They fit fine as I did all the welding work last year on mine. I just cut the door step bits off and tig welded them in. Much better than tying to drill out all the spot welds and make them fit up snug.
