:th: Hi all
i have a mr2 mk1, its been really healthy, really reliable up until now jus after i spent 600quid on her: tyres, clutch, brand new exhaust system!, i also recently painted the cam covers, then i put it all back together and heres what happened  :
it used to idle at 2000rpm on cold and 900 warm.it is now 1250rpm from cold and really lumpy and missfiring a bit, only when revved up slowly, wen i put my foot down it black smokes abit, a guy at work told me it was running redicoulsy rich(which would make sense only gettin 80miles out of 25quid!!!)
on warm idle it bounces off 500- 700rpm still missing!
all ht leads have been cleaned and spark plugs,
i really have no idea what this could be!!
any help would be grateful
cheers

My first ports of call would be the lambda sensor and the cold start injector.

retrace your steps for whatever work you did on the engine, make sure everything you did is in order, it seems wierd that the problem only started when you were at the engine

when i replaced the cam covers i didnt change the metal 2mm thick washers or replace either gasket(seal?)
then i took it all off and went to car shop and asked for a gasket(seal) as i thought this might have cured it...they didnt have one, and offered me silicone gasket maker...i took it and put some silicone round the seal and on the outside so it was air tight. and nothing changed,
and thats the story... :th:

gasket in a tube, a pet hate of mine i must say. Cant help with your problem much but always a good idea to order some proper gaskets so you know they are done right

I would say you have a air leak to do with the piping back to the MAP sensor or the MAP sensor itself. It's quite likely you have disturbed something while doing the cam covers, the vacuum connection for the map sensor is there abouts.
The MAP sensor is a small black box on bulkhead behind the throttle body with a small rubber tube attached to it. Trace the pipework back to the front of the throttle body checking for condition. Check the metal pipe well as these are prone to cracking due to vibration. Also check you haven't knocked the blocking cap off the front "tripod" (I did this and had your symptoms) and check the other pipe as well that is attached to it.

By the way there is no lambda sensor or airflow meter on a mk1 unless its a supercharger.

Well Done. Is that the cap on the "tripod" thing on the front of the throttle body? If so, like I said, I have felt the pain.
