Pop up headlight

Post by thunnisett »

I have a REV 3 and suddenly the passenger pop up light stopped working.

Checked fuses in frunk and all look okay (didn’t check the big relays though)

Headlight bulb actually lights up

It wants to move as you can see it start to pop up a few min then hesitates and stops

Tried the manual adjustment wheel but this adjusts it very slightly when turning it and then suddenly spins back by itself

Any ideas where to go next?

Pull the RTR fuse then try winding it up and down manually, if it does the same thing then something is jamming the mechanism

I pulled the RTR fuse and the manual adjustment still doesn’t move it up.

It’s doing it a bit and then tighten up and won’t go no further.

Any idea how to remove light now or what to do next?

This article might help https://mr2oc.co.uk/know-your-2/mk2/mk2 ... motor.html it will at least it will give you an idea of how it's all assembled.
If you can get access from below the rod that goes between the crank arm on the motor and the headlight is on a ball/socket joint and just pops off leaving the headlight free to move by hand, assuming it's not something on headlight shell that's jamming.
If you can get that rod off you should be able to narrow down what's causing the problem, if the manual adjuster still goes tight then it's the motor, if it's free then you looking at the headlight shell/mechanism/top cover.

you will have to take the headlight out .unplug it and look at the pins in the plug to see if they are corroded. if they are ok you will have to strip it down to clean it under the round cover which is probably siezed on. its easier to buy one off ebay . its the position sensor that fails

Difficult to take it out when he can't raise it ;) if he can't manually wind it up with the RTR fuse out then it's not the electrical side thats stopping it, must be something that's mechanically jamming it.
I can't remember if the MK2 is exactly the same as the MK1 but from what I remember they are very similar so these pics MAY help

Ignore the long bolts holding the cover on they are just to hold the cover on for the pictures, it's normally short screws. The mechanism is shown in the closed position i.e. headlight retracted.

the yellow circles are 2 studs and 2 bolts which are accessible from the luggage compartment. The red circle is a bolt that si accessible from below
You can see the rod I was referring to, just pops off with a bit of wiggling and /or help from a lever

Thank you all

I’ve still not really got anywhere with this. I’ve manage to pop off the lower rod and the headlight still doesn’t budge or adjust!!!
God knows what to do now

It's meant to pop off, I doubt you have damaged anything. If you can't lift the headlight by hand with the rod off, then either something is jamming it or quite possibly the hinge has seized. On the MK1 the headlight shell hinges on 2 rivets, I think on the MK2 it pivots on 2 screws. I have come across a seized one before.
You could try some gentle pressure on a plastic lever inserted between the light & bumper at the front, see if it moves (use some folded cloth to protect the paintwork) See if you can spray some penetrating oil down the side of the light in the area where the pivot points are.
Other than that your only other option may to try and take the complete headlight mechanism out.

Great. Thank you. I’ll give that a go.

There are 2 10mm bolt on the top which I believed hold the mechanism down.

Thanks for all your help
