Power Steering Problem
Starting up today, I noticed the steering was heavier. I then noticed the P/S warning light was on. I have checked the fluid level and it looks OK. Any suggestions on advice will be gratefully received. Car is a UK supplied Rev 3. 1996. No previous problems with the steering.

Re: Power Steering Problem
Turn the ignition on and off quickly five or six times (without starting the engine), Normaly cures it.
i believe Its caused by a sticky power steering relay.

Snorkie,
Thanks for the information, I have done as you suggested and the problem has gone away (for now). The relay seems to get quite hot. Is this normal?

Re: Power Steering Problem
These should be warm in use, but not hot. They are generally failing due to the high-current contacts becoming worn or corroded. Flicking the ignition several times will usually temporarily clean the contacts enough for the current to flow. If you remember your school physics, p=i2*r so if you have a high resistance, the power dissipated across the contacts is increased and this appears as heat...
This relay is nothing special, so any 30amp or better high current relay would work although you can still get the OEM ones new from Toyota in Japan apparently.
