Quicker steering ratio?

Good Evening,

The next phase of upgrades for my MK2 involves refreshing the steering, and I'd like to do a bit more than just replace worn parts. To me, the steering ratio on the MK2 is very high, like bringing a medieval Galleon into port, and I would love to speed it up a bit. I've done a lot of research across various MK2 forums and it looks like there are 2 options;

1) I saw a group buy for a faster ratio pinion for the RHD power-assisted rack around 7-8 years ago. Perhaps I could find an owner willing to sell one of these pinions and fit this to my rack. Maybe the original supplier would be interested in supplying another group buy.

2) I would really love to have a manual rack in my 2 as it fits my driving style and idea of what I'd like the car to behave like, however I understand the ratio on the Rev 1 manual rack is even higher! I haven't seen any concrete evidence of a faster ratio manual rack being done anywhere at all worldwide (please prove me wrong :))

Really I've hit a dead end in my research and would appreciate any advice on making either option 1 or 2 a reality. Thanks in advance

Ollie

Have you tried fitting a smaller steering wheel? I found the steering on my Rev3 a bit twirly, but changing to a 13 in wheel has improved feel and directness. Worth a try.

Quaife do a quick rack kit for the MK1, might be worth asking them

Hey Jimi, I did actually visit that US forum page but obviously did not read on enough! That sounds like the perfect mod to me, thanks so much for pointing it out.

Has anyone here in the UK tried this conversion??

I vaguely recollect someone on TwoBrutal was trying it, but I might be wrong.

Well, its too good an idea to pass on, I will just have to do without a manual rack. Ill give it a shot and report back in a month or two with my findings.

Hi Fellas
I have a 91 Corolla Gti 16v with power steering and have been looking to improve the turn in, I think the rack is around 3.7 turns lock to lock and while the PS makes it a nice car to drive, it's always lacked the pin sharp steering that I enjoyed in my AW11 MK1 mr2.
While the engine is out atm I am hoping to improve the rack ratio and apart from Quaife or VMAX pinion, there's not much about but I did come across this thread and it seems that it maybe possible to use the pinion from MR2 AW30 roadster PS rack
