MR2 Owners Club

Hello All,

I took my MR2 mk3 into a garage last week for a "visual" health check. There were a few problems identified no of which are too major but will need addressing. The main think was to replace the rocker cover gasket. I was quoted £350 for the job which i thought was a bit steep. I have looked online and the part is £30 and the job its self doesn't seem to much trouble has anyone else here attempted this themselves or had it done at a garage?

£350 sounds more like Headgasket price

That would be realistic but not for a cam cover gasket

Old thread I know, but I just changed the rocker cover gasket on a Mk2 ( that's what it's called in the Toyota engine manual) and with today's garage rates I would say £350 wasn't unrealistic.
It's not the easy job I was expecting, I'm no mechanic but I can do most non technical jobs, it took me a good couple or three hours not including cleaning the parts taken off.

Not in any Toyota 3S-GE/GTE engine manual that I have or have seen it's called a "cylinder head cover"
Both RM398E and RM396E (the official Toyota 1993 3S-GE/GTE engine manuals) call it that as do the MK1 and MK3 engine manuals also the Toyota EPC describes it as "Gasket, cylinder head cover"
As for the price, I just had the cam belt and water pump changed on my Nissan Juke, which is around a 5 hour job, £250 (including parts) so IMO £350 for a cam cover gasket is a joke and not in the slightest realistic.
