Smoking MR2

Post by 330Clubsport »

So.......it would seem that smoking does kill as my MR2 decided to smoke while driving home. It looks like the wipers have shorted (they were slow and the intermittent setting had given up) so knew there was an issue but did not expect smoke to come out of the steering cowl after two sweeps.

Has anyone else had experience of this? I have taken the switch assembly apart and the pcb looks fried :(

I have seen some on the bay of E but they look quite tired and don't want to experience this again and this part is discontinued.

Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Contact a breaker like J spec. I’ve never heard of this before so either you’re in the lucky first wave of owners who are about to experience this or the part that went bang was under too much load.

Check your fuses are correctly rated and that the wipers move freely..

Not a common fault I've come across in MR2's, unless your comfortable/competent with electrics I'd get it checked out by an auto electrician. There could be wiring damage other than the switch and without ascertaining the cause first, simply replacing the switch could result in the same ( or worse) happening again.

Thanks for the replies. I managed to buy a replacement which I plugged in and everything works with no smoke but it turns out the part is for the Rev 2 and Toyota changed the mechanism that cancels the indicators so after wrestling with the steering wheel it doesn't fit! So _Al_ you may be right in that the actual PCB or the parts on the PCB have failed - will try J-Spec to see if they can help.

Thanks again for the assistance!

Jimi is spot on. An auto electrician will ensure that the part which went up in smoke was the actual fault, not a symptom of something else failing
