Spun big end bearing - what to do?

Post by BigManMax »

Hi, I spun cylinder 2 big end bearing. I think it has happened due to oil starvation, maybe a clogged oil gallery. It will probably need a new conrod, will I need to replace the piston head along with it? If so should I just repIace all the pistons and conrods with overbore pistons? I know the crankshaft will need grinding and polishing.

Cheers!

Which engine ? If it was oil starvation, why did it happen ?
There's a lot of work and expense involved in removing stripping, inspecting, machining, cleaning and rebuilding the engine. There's a lot of unknowns that can't be answered until the engine is removed and inspected. The crankshaft might be damaged beyond regrinding, may also need an oil pump, parts availability may be a problem
Might be much easier and cheaper to buy a good second hand engine.

3sge, I have just finished taking the engine out of the car. The crankshaft doesn't looks too bad to me but I'm not a machinist so I can't be sure. The conrod definitely needs replacing, and I might as well replace the oil pump with a new one to be safe.
I have been looking at second hand engines but can't find one that has a good history behind it.

Most decent machine shops will check/measure the crankshaft to assess its condition.
Finding decent used engine can be difficult, especially now as there a much less MK2's on the road, less engines conversions going on. At least it's a 3S-GE your looking for, 3S-GTE's are much harder to find.
