Where do I begin?

Post by ALASTAIRBLYTH »

Hi MR2OC,

I was hoping for a little advice on where to start in getting my MK2 Rev 3 1999 Tbar back on the road.

I’ve been working abroad and the vehicle has been stored in my old man’s garage for 14 years. It has the odd sign of rust starting to bubble under the original paint, but the aesthetics are not going to be my concern for quite some time.

There was half a tank off fuel in the car when I decided I was not coming home from Canada, so I know I’ll basically need a new fuel system. Could anyone recommend a book, YouTube video or blog that could help me work out what is required to replace the fuel system. I’d also be very grateful to hear of any sources of information which cover replacing all four corners break components, boots and greasing, the handbrake will of course be well and truly seized and needs addressing.

Basically, I’m looking for help to get the vehicle to a state that I can get it on skates about out of the garage, to a mechanic on the back of a truck who can carry out the real hard parts like engine flushes etc, without having thousands of pounds worth of tasks outstanding, that I can grind through myself. Any further advice on things that I may not have thought of would also be great.

Paint and the exterior will be left to a pro so if there are any mechanics or painters on the forum I’d be very happy to get your contact information for the later stages of my project.

Also. A side note; I’m an electrician so I am handy enough but mechanics and engines are certainly not my strong suit so if you could keep the answers simple enough for a five year old then the pints are on me when I finally get it on the road and to an event.

Thanks to you all,

Alastair

Hi Alastair

First of all well done for taking on the challenge of getting another one of these back on the road. I cannot think of any videos of the top of my head specifically to help you but I can give you a run down on what I would do. Now for getting it back on the road, get yourself a basic set of service items to get the engine up and running again before starting on anything else, so get oil and filter new spark plug an air filter and a fuel filter. At this stage I wouldn't bother with the coolant system as there are many other things to sort first.

The first thing on the car is to drain that old fuel out, you can do this by removing the fuel feed line to the fuel filter, then if you bridge B+ and FP+ together in the diagnostic connector it should run the fuel pump which hopefully still works. if it does then drain everything out and bolt your new filter in and fill the tank with about 10L of nice fresh fuel. If the pump doesn't run you've got a slightly bigger challenge of dropping the tank and replacing the pump its not the worst job to do if you can get the car up nice and high.

Once you've done that fit all the other service items and hopefully you can turn the key and you will have a running MR2! if not some more diagnosing will be required.

Things such as brakes can be refurbished by yourself using kits or you can send them off to Bigg red who will refurbish them for you there will be a couple of other places that can offer a similar service too.

That should be enough to get you started, but check out the Know Your Two section on here it has some great writeups and there are some of Shinny's videos too which might help you out.
