Mr2 mk2 3sge t bar 1989 jap 138k daily drive annual mileage 5000 new clutch 6 years ago
So all of a sudden I can't select gears I'm having to force it in and sometimes can't even get it in 1st.
After driving for a few miles everything goes in Lovely and when the car is turned off everything is smooth.
I changed the gear box oil with decent 75w-90 oil and its still the same.
I've got no new noises knocking etc.
Help!

Re: Crunchy gears.. Sort off
Have a look to see what sort of movement you are getting on you clutch slave cylinder.
When cold and unable to select a gear try pumping the clutch a few times first. If this works there is a problem with the master, slave or fluid or all three!

master cylinder is in the frunk attached to clutch pedal
slave cylinder is on the gearbox by the front mounting point (engine mount).
2 other areas that cause poor selections
1) worn bushes in the selector mechanism (kits available to fix these). they get oval with wear.
2) worn engine mounts allows engine to rock too much.

As mentioned above the slave is bolted to the front side of the gearbox.
Sometimes the mounting bolts can strip.
Sometimes the seals in them leak letting fluid and pressure out and air in
Also if it's not been bled in a long time the fluid could have absorbed some moisture making it not work properly. And any air in the line will work it's way to the slave.
Yes the selector cables ends can wear and get ovoid making it difficult to select gears and be imprecise but this would manifest both cold and warm. Again there is a brass cube in the selector mechanism that wears making an imprecise change but both hot and cold.
As you say the shift improves when warm makes me think it's more likely to be the hydraulic side of things.
