REV 1/2/3 3.0 V6 conversions, who has one?
I’m slowly getting there with uoraywd mods to get my Rev2 ready for more power.
I’ve had a rev 2 turbo in the past and loved it, but I just cannot decide which route to take. V6 or Tubby conversion.
I’m leaning towards the V6 for driveabukity and reliability, but I would like to know if the 3.0 V6 actually feels like a fast car?
I love that thump in the back you get with a good turbo engine, and I’ve owned many turboed stuff in the past but I’m now looking for reliability and lazy torque.
I know the pros and cons of each but do those that have a 3.0 V6 car feel it is a genuinely fast car and is able to put a grin on their face?
Or should I just get a full tubby conversion.
Thanks.
Chris.

I've been out in one and driven one and yes it feels a bit special, it sounds epic and for a cruiser. However, if you want a fast car then tubby is the way to go. Me and craig (who owns the v6) both agreed that the v6 as a daily is awesome. But for a weekend bit of fun, a good tubby blows it away!

3vz is roughly 200-210bhp. A 1mz is 220-230 bhp.
A (rev3) turbo is 240bhp or so but with less torque.
All the v6s have lots more torque from low down and are a more leisurely drive as you don't need to be up at 4000/5000rpm or changing gear so much.
The v6 is a more pleasant day to day cruiser.
Aaron has one for sale which is pretty special.

Do you feel that push back into the seat when you stamp on the loud peddle?

yes my V6 is as strong as standard tubby (rev2/3) right up to the time I change up and the tubby has another 1000-1500 rpm before they have to change.. then they just walk away. same in each gear. round Scotland on highland drive no real diff unless longish straightish roads.
its horses for courses, power delivery is totally different,
2GR is the way to go if you got the cash.
if you never been in a V6 before then try and get a ride, better still get a rev3+ tubby and V6 and have ride back to back, see which you prefere

gen3 turbo makes about 224lbs, 1mz makes 209lbs.gavsdavs wrote: ↑22/10/17 22:24 3vz is roughly 200-210bhp. A 1mz is 220-230 bhp.

so peak torque the 2.0 turbo wins, but area under the curve the v6 would do better.
2GR is a very different story

Re: REV 1/2/3 3.0 V6 conversions, who has one?
Im having to make the same decision. Currently refreshing my turbo engine but thinking maybe v6?
Ive done and drove a 3vz conversion and it sounded awesome. Power was pretty much neck and neck with my standard rev 2 turbo before upgrading the turbo.
Id agree with mrandy. For a daily a v6 is a must... turbo for fun.
Next decision is which v6.... can pickup a 1mz for £500 but then next step up is the 1mz vvti from a rx300 for about £1k. If i had the money then a 2gr.
If you can find one then a 3vz is the easiest but oldest so a rebuild before installing is worth it.

I’ve run my 1MZ for the last two years and love it. I’m just in the process of doing a 1MZ VVTi conversion (Lexus RX300) into a black Rev 5. I love them but having never driven a turbo difficult for me to compare. All the best with the final decision.

As all the ladies say, it's less to do with the headline figure, and more to do with the breadth of the curve.
The V6 engines are making 90% of their peak torque at 2000rpm, and a turbo needs to get to 4000 to match the number.
For those considering it - you really should be looking at the MZ engines - the VZs make a nice noise but they weigh a shedload and they don't make a lot of power. The MZ is a lot lighter and makes more power.

Re: REV 1/2/3 3.0 V6 conversions, who has one?
I can confirm what peteV6R5 said. I have had him filling my mirrors on several Highland Drives and T2 has a bit more poke than stock! On the majority of UK roads (especially the sort where a MR2 excels) a well driven V6 will have no difficulty keeping up with a turbo.
Power is just for bragging rights at the bar, torque is king. The flatter the curve and the lower down the rev range it kicks in the better. It's why you can end up being embarassed by many modern turbo diesels.
All my MR2s have been/are 4 pots (3S-GE/3S-GTE) but I have been able to drive most varieties of V6. If I was starting over it wouldn't be a turbo: definitely a 2GR. The only downside is that you will definitely need deep pockets compared with any of the others.

Was the v6 ever a factory option? As I use my n/a car for light roadgoing competition I need to stay with a factory option engine or go up to Modsport.

Thanks, as I thought. Anyone got a nice original turbo for sale?
