rev range 'bounce'?

Post by Cattwooduk »

Ok I've just discovered a new confusing issue with my engine to keep me on the learning curve. I noticed when i was crawling up to a set of lights that the revs were bouncing around between about 1-1.5k until I came to a stop, driving seems fine but pulling away is feels strange and the revs drop away as I come off the clutch.
I just had a play and the problem seems to be; if I slowly rev the engine up as soon as I reach 1650rpm it suddenly drops to normal idle then bounces back up if I keep my foot in the same position. If I slowly edge more onto the power it suddenly pops up to around 2000 rpm and is fine from there upwards. Just seems to not like the 1600-1900 range at all. If I stick at 2000 and gently come off the power it just plops down to idle and bounces around until I get to about 1550 then it's fine again.
I've had problems with the usual wax-stat related idle before and just upped the warm idle to about 1000-1100 with the idle screw and seems to have solved the problem, but this seems unrelated.

Any ideas oh wise ones? :D
Thanks
~Chris

Sounds like it might be TPS related.
1000/1100 is bit high for warm idle, unless the idle-up vsv has been activated, it's easy enough to sort out AAV (waxstat) problems .......... bypass with it and do Paul Woods manual choke conversion, best thing since sliced bread :th: all the details on doing it are in "Know Your 2"

Deleted last post, was a bit messy last night after night out with guys from work
I set the idle to about 1000 because when it's left idling when warmed up, after a few minutes it tends to drop another 100-200 rpm, so when it was set to 850, after a while it would drop to aruond 600rpm and shake the engine around a lot. This was following a post I made back in the spring I think. Can't really afford a choke conversion at the moment!

What is TPS by the way? :confused1: I also posted on the IMOC and had a few answers on there but I'm not really understanding any of them at the moment, need to have another read over them when my head has cleared, still a bit delicate after last night
