Isn't the VR6 engine quite heavy? Although i think a VR6 engined MR-2 is quite cool and different.

On the topic of different engines in different cars i disagree that an non toyota engine in a toyota car is wrong. Alot of the drifters put toyota engines in nissans, and the 2JZ engine seems to end up in everything (so far ive seen it in nissans, mazdas BMW's and fords).

IMO Sometimes you cant buy the car you want so you have to make it :D

According to the seller it's a mk3 golf VR6 engine.
But the seller is a tool and really doesn't know anything about the engine, the MR2 or anything else for that matter. He doesn't even know which model VR6 engine it is or even what year it is.

The VR6 engine is a great engine actually and very very tuneable for cheap prices.
Chips are available for $100 gaining you a 7400rpm redline and about 10hp up top. Camshafts are readily available from most makers in lots of configurations. There are loads of intake configurations available and even whole intake manifolds. Exhaust manifolds again readily available, even ones for turboing.
All in all it's actually a very good engine, revs nicely, has a sound track to die for and very easy to tune when it comes to it and we all know it always does :laughing

Too bad the seller is a tool cause I would have grabbed that with an offer of £300 and stuck it in a garage and periodically yet slowly finish it off.

.
disagree, you love japanese engines because they are high revving and japanese!
that is a stupid engine to even bother to put into a 2, just aswell go turbo, easier and more powerful.

your'e eithger JDM or german, 1 or the other, dont mix them.
Wrong. Its your car do what you want with it.
Car companys sell engine designs to eachother all the time so most modern engines have been in loads of cars in various guises over the years.
I saw a nice E36 M3 with a twin turbo supra engine it it not long back. You cant tell me you wouldnt admire that.
would rather a supra engine in the supra, or the 2jz-gte in a celica supra.

A toyota should have a toyota engine in it. A 2 isnt a 2 without it, sackrelidge.
I presume you know the engine in your Toyota is a Yamaha engine and not a Toyota?

Nothing wrong with mixing engines, my Audi V8 Mk1 monster being a prime example.
I certainly do, no noob here. However Toyota comissioned it and flogged it like that so happy days.

Audi engine in a 2 or a toyota engine in a german eurobox, either way seems wrong.

Sort of lost its JDMness, not a fan at all and wont change on that one. Like a mongrel.

More than understand why its done and the benifits just think it detracts from the car as a whole. How come you didnt go for a Jap lump in the mk1?

How come i didn't go for a Jap lump in a Mk1?

Mate i've put just about every variation of Toyota engine into a Mk1 already bar the 2jz which just won't fit, i've done all of the Jap variations to death both for myself and customers, i even tried sticking the Lexus 1uz-fe into a Mk1 but it needed too many chassis mods to work, and i wasn't happy cutting it to that extreme.

The Audi V8 is actually shorter than a Camry V6, so to get a working V8 Mr2 it is the obvious choice.Without using the compact Audi V8 then a V8 Mr2 becomes incredibly hard to do.

I wouldn't let cross manufacturer tuning cloud your judgement, after all F1 do it along with many other branches of motorsport, an engine is an engine.

I agree it's nice if it can be kept all Toyota, there's a certain coolness in that, but nothing wrong with using another makers engine at all, Toyota are using the Subaru boxer engine in the new GT86 are they not?

It's just a boxer engine using Toyota technology, I believe Yamaha build the head.

By that thinking does it then become a Subaru engine in the Subaru version of the GT86?

How reliable are the hamsters? I mean, what sort of servicing do they require, and do they need changing often?
How many years service can I expect per hamster and what are the feeding costs per mile?

I am in the camp of its just an engine. If it goes like stink and doesn't mess up the handling then why not? I can appreciate some of the finer work that goes into some engine swaps. Totally agree with whoever said sometimes you cant buy the car you want, you have to make it. Heck i was dreaming of a Capri with a ca18/sr20det engine with a properly located rear axle for YEARS and hadn't seen one. Picked up practical performance mag one day and someone had beaten me to it. sr20 Capri or e30 or p100 pickup i personally think would be spot on :D
