Re: must be the gearbox??
Sorted now!!!!:-D!!!!!!
it was the adjustment on the pedal...... The master cylinder rod was screwed all the way into the pedal joint! Unscrewed it 2.5 turns and was mmuch better then another half turn, so 3 total and it's great, slick in all gears. Going to screw it in quater turn to basically fine tune it.
Just a note, where it was, I pushed the pedal fully down and put a marker line on the rod, adjusted it and done the same again, the rod now goes 6mm further into the master!
Now that that was sorted I treated it to New brake pads all round, repaired the seat runner and have it a good polish.
Next job after the fine tune is a radiator. Woop

Re: must be the gearbox??
great its sorted - never seen that much change on the rod before.
live and learn.
you must have had 1/4 travel before picking up the rod to have 6mm out.

Re: must be the gearbox??
Was a fair bit of travel, about 4cm before any resistance, the free play screw was pretty much all the way out.
Note to self, check basics before jumping to drastic conclusions
BIG THANKS TO ALL THAT HELPED!!!!

Re: must be the gearbox??
Note to self: never assume that the car wasn't sabotaged...
How on earth has someone woken up one day and thought:
"You know what, today is the day that I'm finally going to satisfy my craving to adjust my clutch pedal"
Flash forward an hour.. Adjustment made, car which was driving fine no longer goes in to gear and the resulting grinding noises are clearly indicating a high degree of mechanical distress...
"Perfect, job done. I'll leave it like that and not mention it to anyone"
Glad it's fixed anyway - good on you for saving a car that many would have scrapped!
