front dampers
This is going to be ovbious to most people, changing the top mounts at the moment. Checking the whole lot over. Reading the bgb and it states the rod should depress smoothly and return smoothly. By return does it mean that the rod should return on its own or does it mean if you pull it back up it should be smooth?

Yep. Common failure. Needs new inserts (if rebuildable struts) or complete units - which are also easier to change. Try TCB parts for prices. Always had good service from them.
