Whats this part and how do I remove it?!
Having a thick moment here, the rear of my MK2 has this black grid style piece that hangs down over the front of my exhaust. I'm planning to switch out the old rusted exhaust for a nice stainless steel one so would like to be able to see it. I can't seem to figure out what this grid piece is actually called let alone what its for and whether it can be removed and how! Can anyone help?

The grille you mean is an integral part of the bodywork and can't technically be removed. That said, it is quite common to "Modify" the grille to show off those shiny danglers
There are 2 accepted methods to modify this. Firstly you can bend the grille up out of the way which does mean that at a later date you could possibly bend it back. From experience it never quite looks the same.
Method 2 involes the trusty angle grinder....Cut it off

Ah OK, angle grinder might be the way forward then, although I was hoping it would unbolt somewhere! I'm a little concerned as you said 'The grille you mean is an integral part of the bodywork.....' whats the purpose of this integral part, will I miss having it?!

To be honest, in 10 years I've never noticed it missing other than looks. I believe it was put in place to disguise/hide the original back box and make it harder to touch
By integral I simply meant it wasn't bolted on, it's a welded and shaped part of the bodywork.

OK great, I'm assuming bending it out the way might actually be more effort than removing it so looks like I'm on the hunt for an angle grinder! Lol

bending up out the way is very easy, thin metal structure.cjhunter2k wrote: ↑11/09/18 11:10 OK great, I'm assuming bending it out the way might actually be more effort than removing it so looks like I'm on the hunt for an angle grinder! Lol

Stock exhaust still looks the best. Surprised someone didn't come along and make a direct fit stainless replacement that fits on the factory hangers. Still running the same exhaust as what came out of the factory in 1990 but we don't get the rust issues. It may be heavy but it lasts forever.
