Boot Lock

Post by gbb14 »

Hello,

So I just bought a '92 MR2 Rev2 a couple of days ago, and I love it to bits. Solved all technical issues with it.
This is my first post here :) :)
Somehow in the process of restoration of the boot lock, I have forgotten to attach the latch rod to the cilinder, and closed the boot.
Now the boot is stuck closed.
The barrel is not in valet mode. The key works perfectly fine. The boot latch near driver's seat works fine.
Is there any way I can fish that latch rod without doing any damage?

(attaching pictures from mr2oc .com so that we can have a visual representation.
Cheers guys!

If you don't have the carpet in the boot (doesn't look it in the pictures) then the only other way into the boot is through the cabin. Take off the trim on the side behind the seat and there is a cavity that goes behind the rear quarter panel into the boot (it's where the boot release cable is routed). You'd need a long coat hanger or something and you'd basically be fishing for it blind. It's a real long shot but I'm pretty sure that's the only other way into the boot.

I managed to open the boot using a scope inspection camera and a wire coat hanger, I entered from the engine bay side of the boot, between the boot seal. Locate the latch using the camera and then navigate with the coat hanger wire to grip the latch wire and pull to release the boot open. No damage done and opened in minutes
Not Plan B again!! Why don't we just go with plan B in the first place?

The other side of the cabin is the engine compartment, then the boot ;) that's a long way to fish blind for something in the middle of the boot

If you pop the drivers side rear quarter light off undo the two screws on light, and move it out slightly
Then push the rubber grommet on light loom into the boot
Take the prop off the front boot and maneuvere it through the light wire hole then slowly work it around till you feel the boot lock and pull
Amazingly was real easy only took less than 5 minutes in total to do

I got in via the rubber seal adjacent to the engine bay as per Jeff’s link. Not as terrible a job as you’d expect. I didn’t even have access to a camera.
