Engine bay wiring help
Hi, I was wondering if any one would be able to give me some information about the wiring in these pictures. It is a 3sge. I’m not sure if these are connected to me having the battery/brake oil/engine bay fan warning lights.
Sorry the pictures are rotated it wouldn’t allow me to upload otherwise.

Re: Engine bay wiring help
Normally those 3 lights on are an indication of alternator problems, is the engine running (or able to run) ?
That relay with the grey wires isn't standard, so can't help with that.
You can download the electrical diagrams from the downloads section, also in the MK2 Useful Info forum.
What problem are you having ?

Re: Engine bay wiring help
Ok nws I was thinking some aren’t stock as I couldn’t find them on the wiring diagram but since it’s top down it’s quite hard to distinguish between wires.
Yeah the car starts and drives, battery is sitting just below the thick whit line on the gauge.
I also hit ‘rev-limit’ at 4500~ revs and today it then hit this at 3500~ revs, I was thinking some of these disconnected cables could be the problem.

Re: Engine bay wiring help
Hi. Right the first picture that relay is the starter motor relay. Its not a standard relay it should be green. Second picture that looks like the upper earth strap and that eye connector should be bolted to the body if the other end is bolted to the engine. Can’t be 100% on the last two. But having the battery and cooling fan light on indicates that the alternator is not charging. So the black white wire might be the 12v feedback from the alternator bringing the fault up. The last picture looks like the ac idle up connector so if it doesn’t have ac its fine as for the broken wire I will need to look at the wiring diagram to refresh.

Re: Engine bay wiring help
Ok great thanks bryney, I was thinking that earth strap was on the alternator but couldn’t find a bolt to fit, I’ll attach that. my car doesn’t have ac so that’s also fine. I’m going to crimp on a connector to the black and white wire just need to figure out where to connect this, as I couldn’t find it on the wiring diagram though I’m not the greatest at reading them, I’m more used to pipes/valves and the sort than electrical. Cheers!

Re: Engine bay wiring help
Depends on whether it's Black/White or White/black is a earth (ground) wire, Black/White could be a few things.
The broadest stripe is the main colour(1st) and the narrowest one is the trace colour (2nd)

Re: Engine bay wiring help
Black white is usually 12v+ but please check before putting it anywhere. I have had a quick look at the alternator wiring and it is not one of the 3 wires for the multi plug. So it could be any of the oil level sensor, oil pressure switch or just the ac condensor plug.
Also white black is the earth. Its easy to get them mixed up.

Hmm that’s weird it’s in the same channel then, I’ll have to do some deep digging as tried to find them on pictures online and they didn’t have a black/white cable their either.

Re: Engine bay wiring help
What year/rev is the car ? black/white is used on quite a few circuits in the engine bay.

Re: Engine bay wiring help
First pic: could the wire hanging lose actually be meant to connect to the (similar looking) wire with a bit of black insulation tape on it? The one that looks like it’s leaning on the ECU?
Second pic: agree it’s an Earth strap and I think it may originally have bolted to the same place as the pipe which you can see hanging lose on the right of the pic.
Third pic: could go to the alt or the O2 sensor so take a look and see if there’s anything obviously missing on either.
Pic 4: in that area there’s nothing non-essential so if it’s off and the car works at all it’s probably AC related.
Forgetting the pics for a moment, the early rev limiter sounds like a Throttle Position Sensor fail to me. Have you read ECU codes?

Re: Engine bay wiring help
The first picture. That wire that is taped up is the original starter motor relay earth. It will be white black. Hence why the aftermarket relay is earthed via the bracket bolt. Then the other loose white wire is not original as it is not part of the loom but pushed through the firewall. As for the black white wire in the third picture. This could go to a number of things. It is definitely not part of the alternator wiring 100% there. It could be the lambda, low oil level sensor on the sump, oil pressure switch, part of the ac magnetic clutch and maybe the cooling fan. Always check before just putting wires anywhere.
