Was given a water pump by a friend recently who told me it would fit my 1996 MR2.
It looks pretty much exactly the same but can anyone verify ?
The original box says made by Circoli with the number 201 82 0031
It also states on the label 'Toyota Equivalent OE 16100-79236 856254-06 14' & 'Water pump various Toyo'

That looks like a Toyota part number the 16100 is correct BUT the Toyota EPC does not recognise the complete number for ANY Toyota.
These are all the 3S-GE part numbers
If you search Google, Circoli 201820031 or 856254-06 are not found either.
Are your numbers correct ?

Searching with that number comes up with this

Pump is for a Celica with a 3S-GTE (i.e. turbo) engine, I don't know if it will fit your car.
I will say that it would be very unusual for Toyota not to list it for the MR2 if it was suitable. When you search the EPC by part number it lists every model of Toyota that the part will fit, they don't use different part numbers for different models if it fits more than one model.
Searching with that number comes up with this
