Hi, I've used halfords 10w-40 in my car since I got it- its a rev2 NA... is this the right oil to be using to protect the engine the best please?

I'm doing a filter change tomorrow morning so any advice tonight would be really welcome! thanks...

From what I've read the best oil seems to be 5w-40, is that right?

Thanks again

Guy

5w-40 is better than 10w-40 this time of year.

The lower the "w" number the better the cold start performance

How modded and what kind of use does the car get?

For normal road use a 5w-40 synthetic is ideal, if you drive it like it was stolen, or track the car then go 10w-50.

when changing the oil do you recommend a good oil flush to ensure the engine is thoroughly cleaned out or is it best just to drain it warm and replace with new filter?

If you are using quality oil with regular changes there will be no need for a flush.
Always drain when warm, you will get most out then as the oil thins.

I haven't serviced it since i bought it in Jan 08, it was serviced Sept 08 but no idea what oil was used though it still looks quite clean. Would you recommend a flush and then carry on using quality oils every change thereafter??

No dont bother with a flush, just go for regular changes and it will give it a good clean.

No, no issues just generally not needed these days. Use decent oil and it will give it a good clean over the next few oil changes.

Using specific flushes can do more harm then good as they tend to be too harsh.
