Exhaust heat shield temperature - mk2 turbo
Morning guys, quick question for you.
Not happy with my engine detailing so will be having a look at it at some point. One of the things I painted was the heat shield over the turbo. Now, the paint I used was a vht paint which I thought would be ok. Nope, I was wrong. The paint cooked on the shield, discoloured and gassed me in the process....
So what temperatures are we talking here? If I am going to do it again, I don't want to be high as a kite after 3 miles and I want the paint to last in the colour I choose

My vht paint from halfords still looks as fresh as when I painted it. Which paint did you use?

The halfords stuff looks good, although if you want red, don't buy theirs. I got some yesterday & painted some bits and it came out bright orange

Tom, I used this stuff which is apprently rated to 228 degrees C

I am looking for a gold with as high a temp rating as possible. Going for a complete colour change but don't want to have to visit it a third time

Re: Exhaust heat shield temperature - mk2 turbo
That will be why then, ideally you should be looking at stuff that is rated for 5-600 degrees C.MR2Jay wrote:Tom, I used this stuff which is apprently rated to 228 degrees C
There's a gold VHT on eBay which is rate to just under 500 degrees C.

Re: Exhaust heat shield temperature - mk2 turbo
So the 500°C stuff should do the job then?

Re: Exhaust heat shield temperature - mk2 turbo
My best guess would be yes. You could always point an infra red thermometer at it to get a better idea of the temps. If in doubt, re-fab from stainless or Ti.MR2Jay wrote:So the 500°C stuff should do the job then?
