Help: Exhaust and catalyst help and advice needed

Post by dexterMR2 »

Hi all

long time no see, mostly because the MR2 has been fine and I had other issues in life to deal with.

MR2 failed MOT on exhaust leak.

The photo shows that the flange/seal that keeps the catalyst attached to the exhaust pipe is completely blown/rusted away.

Q1: Is the flange/seal a separate piece I can buy, because the other parts appear to be fine ? (says the mechanic).

Q2: If they are, where can I get them?

Any other advice more than welcome.

cheers all.

Welcome back!

At the end of the day we’re talking about a flat bit of metal with holes in it, welded to a pipe. It shouldn’t be a tough fabrication job for any custom exhaust place, though I’ve never had it done myself.

As an alternative there are loads of cars breaking or exhausts sold individually on eBay / Facebook market place.

Thanks, nice to see the place is still alive and kicking!

Are all revision exhausts and catalysts the same for N/A cars ? Are they interchangeable?

Turbo exhausts? (probably not, but thought I'd ask)

I can only find one custom exhaust shop in Portsmouth. I have a feeling they will not want to do this job, but I will ask.

So far as I know, all NA cats and exhausts are interchangeable between all NA models but they’re definitely not interchangeable with either style of turbo cat or exhaust.

I think that’s why decats are advertised as turbo or NA, they’re not the same. If the different NA cats weren’t interchangeable you’d see exhausts etc advertised as rev 1 NA, rev 3 NA etc. typically it’s just “na”.

The epc suggests you need the model code (on the VIN plate in the frunk) - https://toyota-europe.epc-data.com/mr2/sw20r/
The diagrams have clickable links. There are different part numbers listed for the front pipe, cat, and back box, depending on the date. I can't say for sure, but that could mean they're not interchangeable.
If you're not living life on the edge, you're taking up too much room!

Mr T uses the Frame/VIN/VDS number for identification of the correct part, it's the first thing my local Mr T asks for, I imagine they all do.
Worth noting that with all the EPC's you need to get the format of the Frame/VIN/VDS number exactly right or they either won't accept it or say not found.
For example the one Tony linked to needs a hyphen between the model code (AW11, SW20, SW21 or ZZW30) and the number.
Normally with Mr T if the part number is different it's not interchangeable, parts that are used on different years/models have the same part number irrespective of the year/model.
If you know a part number the EPC has the option to search for all models it's used on.
Tony that online one you linked to doesn't have the same search options or provide the same information detail on the car as proper EPC. ToyoDIY.com does but the diagrams aren't visible to most, the other online one I have used japan-parts.eu appears to be down at the moment  don't know if it's permanent, I'll have to check into it.

Mine was in a similar state as yours, mine had rusted completed and basically fused. Couldn't undo the bolts as they didn't even have a hex head. I cut mine and bought a new CAT and exhaust. Depends how much damage you do trying to get it off but a CAT was £70, decat are quite a bit cheaper?

Thanks for the info guys.

Anybody knows if these are any good?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/202659925568 ... R8aB2oWdYQ

Perhaps a new exhaust is what I need to do, but I don't know anywhere else to look other than Ebay and Mr2 Ben.

(I am not a big fan of japspeed exhausts), any pointers?

The one linked is basically a stock backbox. Depends what you want to have and how much you want to spend. I went with a mongoose from MR2 Ben but wouldn't buy from there and go elsewhere, DC performance have the mongoose but of course it's a quite a bit more expensive than the stockish one. I also didn't want to go Japspeed. I'd either go for that one you linked on or a mongoose.

Are you able to undo the bolts for the cat both sides, i.e. backbox and downpipe?

Try and get them off first then access the situation. I only tried to replace the cat and ended up with a shiny new exhaust

My experience (bitter) says if it’s clinging to life then don’t disturb it till you have everything you need to replace it!
