Had the sloshing swimming pool noise from the cubbys behind the seats so just removed both rear wing air intakes to unblock the tubes with a coat hanger.

Using a cloth to protect the wing, gently insert something flat edged between the wing and the plastic air vent trim and lever the intake out. (there are 3 clips that you will need to remove from the car and fit back on the plastic intake before refitting)



As you can see, mine were full of gunk.

This is how much water came out of passenger side after unblocking the drain tube.




So if you did not know how to do this... now you do

Yup. I did it to my silver one twice, this is the first time I think this has been done on my grey one since it was new.
Takes 5 minutes per side Steve. Not a biggie to do.

Most people state that they normally break or lose on average one clip per side when removing the vents and advise purchasing some as spares.
I have removed mine a couple of times and never lost or broke any but replaced them all due to age deteriation.

Nice one also as a precaution I let the hood back halfway so that you can look down between the hood and its storage position whilst the hood is slack and hoovered out all manner of seeds, leaves and dust from the drain point down there which is just behind the rear edge of the door. Looks like a plug hole with grill much like the one you show with the side vent removed so we know what we are looking for.

I have suffered this exact problem on the weekend. i found the cubby holes were filling up, turns out there were litres of water above the cubby holes, the drain tubes are blocked. I had to suck a buckets worth of water out

I am scared about damaging the intake when removing it, did it pop off quite easily?

Has anybody ever removed the MR2 air intake? I tried last night with screw drivers but couldn't get it off. Do you need to pull at it as well?

As you can see from my pics at the start of the thread, the intake pops out easily enough.
The important thing is taking care not to damage the paintwork.

Hi. A common problem this. When first acquired my car the drains were well blocked. Mistakenly ordered a Mazda MX5 (sorry dirty word!) flexible brush bit like `mini' chimney sweep brush. Did the trick, but tight fit through outlet.
My real question is, once water drains from the tube into the void behind the air intake, where is it supposed to go? Mine just seems to dribble from the sill seam directly below. Can't see any other option but doesn't seem like a good idea, especially if loads of rubbish ends ip there as well!
The air intakes have 'hooks' on rear edge and pop in clips on front edge, which in theory can be removed with the correct trim tool (who has all of them!) but inevitably pulls out of the fixings, if you're lucky without breaking and can be refitted. So removal; is force rear edge away from lip on body and then 'pop' out the clips, refitting the reverse.

Must be some kind of record ? 9 year old thread revival
